Stainless sheet is specified by grade first. 304 and 316L are the names that appear most often on architectural metalwork; they are not interchangeable in a marine or chemically exposed detail. If the specification is silent, say where the metal will sit — interior lift surround, exterior trim, wet area — so the enquiry can be read with that exposure in mind. We still quote a named grade, not an assumed one.
Finish changes both appearance and handling. 2B is mill-smooth; No.4 is brushed; BA is bright. Grain direction on a brushed lift surround is a site argument if it is not stated. Protective film should be requested when the sheets will be fabricated or stored on a busy floor. Thickness and sheet format (sheet versus coil, standard mill size versus cut size) belong on the same list.
We do not polish, weld or install stainless. We source the sheet against grade, finish, thickness and size, and we pass on mill documentation where the supplier provides it for that heat or item. If a project standard names a surface roughness or a specific mill, include it. Close visual matches across different coils are not promised.
Related aluminium and fixings can travel in one request when they meet at a joint. The quotation will state the offered grade and finish in Latin characters (for example SS 316L · 2B) so there is no ambiguity between locale and mill language.
